November to March is the busiest stretch of the application calendar. Early results arrive, regular deadlines approach and the paperwork for money starts to pile up. It is also easy to lose track, because each country, college and funding body keeps its own dates.

This guide gives you a map of the season for students applying to start in 2027 in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. It lists what is confirmed, explains what varies and shows how to build your own calendar. Dates change, so confirm each one on the official site or with the college before you rely on it.

How to use this guide

Dates in education are of two kinds. Some are national and fixed, such as a central application service deadline. Others belong to individual colleges and funders. You need to know which kind you are looking at.

  1. Write down every college or program you are applying to.
  2. Find its deadline for your application type on its own admissions page.
  3. Add the financial aid and scholarship deadlines for each.
  4. Put them in one calendar with a reminder two weeks before and one week before.

If a date here differs from what a college tells you, the college wins.

The United States

Admission

Many U.S. colleges set regular decision deadlines in early to mid January. Some set them earlier, in late fall, and some later, in February or on a rolling basis. Early decision and early action rounds that closed in the fall are now producing results, and a second early decision round at some colleges closes around the new year.

What to do now:

  • Check each college's page for the exact regular decision date and time zone.
  • Submit your application a few days early so technical problems do not catch you.
  • Send test scores and transcripts if the college requires them, and request them in time. Common App step by step walks through the application itself.
  • Respond to any updates the college asks for after an early decision or early action result, such as a deferral.

Financial aid

Financial aid timing is separate from admission timing. The U.S. Department of Education launched the 2027-28 FAFSA in late September 2026, which news reports described as the earliest launch the program has had. That means you can complete it now rather than waiting until the new year.

Points to keep in mind:

  • Federal, state and school deadlines are different. The federal deadline is far in the future, but states and colleges often set their own, much earlier, and some aid is first come, first served.
  • Some colleges also require the CSS Profile or their own aid forms. Check each college's financial aid page.
  • You usually need your parents' or guardians' information if you are a dependent student, so give them notice. FAFSA explained covers the form step by step.

Scholarships

Many scholarships close between December and March. Keep a list with each deadline and the documents required, and start the longer essays early.

The United Kingdom

UCAS deadlines

UCAS and universities list two main dates for 2027 entry:

Date Who it applies to
15 October 2026, 6pm UK time Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses. This date has passed.
13 January 2027, 6pm UK time Most other courses, for equal consideration

If you missed the October date, you cannot apply to those courses for 2027 entry, but you may be able to plan for another year or look at other options. If you are aiming for the January date, give yourself time to get a reference, finish your personal statement and pay the fee.

Applications after the January date are generally still possible for many courses until later in the cycle, but universities are not required to consider them equally, and some courses fill. Check with the university.

Student finance

Students from the UK apply separately for tuition and maintenance loans through the student finance body for their nation. Check when applications for 2027 entry open for your nation and apply early, because processing can take weeks and you need your funding in place before term starts. Parents or a partner may need to supply income information.

For students in England, the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement now applies to courses starting from 1 January 2027, so check which system your course uses.

International students

If you need a Student visa, you cannot apply until you have a confirmation of acceptance from a university. The living-cost amount you must show is due to rise for applications made from 30 November 2026, so check the figure for the date you plan to apply. For the longer view on post-study work, read how the Graduate route changes for applications from 1 January 2027.

Canada

Admission

Application dates in Canada depend on the province and the university. In Ontario, applications for many undergraduate programs go through a central service, and deadlines for first-year programs commonly fall in mid-January, with some programs earlier. In other provinces, universities set their own dates, and some admit on a rolling basis. Check each program's page and, for Ontario, the central application service.

Financial aid

Provincial student aid applications open in the spring or summer in most provinces. Scholarships offered by universities often have winter deadlines and are linked to your application, so read the instructions.

International students

International students need a study permit, and most need a provincial or territorial attestation letter issued for the current cap year. Letters from an earlier cap year cannot be used. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions have been exempt from the letter since 1 January 2026. Because the 2026 cap year ends in December, check how the next allocation works before you plan an application for later in 2027.

A month-by-month plan

Month What to focus on
November Finish essays, request recommendations and transcripts, complete the FAFSA if you are applying in the U.S.
December Submit early deadlines, track results, finalize UCAS references
January Submit regular decision and UCAS applications, send updates, apply for scholarships
February Complete aid forms that remain, prepare for interviews, send mid-year reports
March Review offers as they arrive, compare aid, visit campuses

Documents to gather now

  • Transcripts or predicted grades.
  • Test scores, where required.
  • A draft of your main essay or personal statement.
  • Recommendation requests, sent several weeks ahead.
  • Financial documents for aid forms.
  • A passport and, for international applicants, evidence of funds.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up admission and aid deadlines. Admission can be on time and aid can still be late.
  • Relying on a friend's date. Each college and program has its own.
  • Waiting for the last hour. Servers slow down and mistakes get costly.
  • Ignoring time zones. A deadline stated in another time zone may be earlier than you think.
  • Skipping the follow-up. After you submit, check that each college has received everything.

If you are behind

It happens. Work out which deadlines are still open, rank them by importance and deal with the earliest first. Contact admissions offices, because many are flexible about documents and some have late or rolling options. If a deadline has truly passed, ask about the next intake or consider a gap year. The gap year guides in this library can help you think it through.

Questions to ask an admissions office

If a date is unclear, ask directly and keep the reply.

  1. Is the deadline for my application type the same as the one on your website, and at what time and in which time zone?
  2. Do you accept late applications, and are they considered equally?
  3. Which documents can arrive after the deadline, and by when?
  4. Is the financial aid deadline different, and does applying late affect my aid?
  5. Who should I contact if the portal fails near the deadline?

A short, polite email a few weeks early gets you an answer while you can still act on it.

Final thoughts

This season rewards organization more than anything else. List every deadline, separate admission from aid, confirm each date at the source and give yourself a few days of margin. Check the official sites, including ucas.com, studentaid.gov and each college's page, before you submit, because dates and rules can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FAFSA open for the 2027-28 year?

Yes. The U.S. Department of Education launched the 2027-28 FAFSA in late September 2026, the earliest launch in the program's history. Check studentaid.gov for the current status and your state and school deadlines, which are usually earlier than the federal one.

What is the main UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?

Universities and UCAS list 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time as the equal-consideration deadline for most courses. The earlier 15 October 2026 deadline applied to Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses. Confirm on ucas.com.

When are U.S. regular decision deadlines?

They vary by college, but many fall in early to mid January, with some in late fall or February. Your own list of colleges matters more than any general date.

Can I still apply after a deadline has passed?

Sometimes. Some colleges accept late or rolling applications, and UCAS lets you apply after the main deadline, though a university may not give late applications equal consideration. Ask the admissions office rather than assuming.

What is the most common mistake at this time of year?

Treating the admission deadline and the financial aid deadline as the same date. They are separate, and aid often has its own earlier cutoffs.
