What Does ABD (All But Dissertation) Mean?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

ABD stands for all but dissertation. It describes a doctoral student who has completed all the requirements for the degree except for writing and defending the dissertation. At this stage the student has finished coursework, passed comprehensive or qualifying exams and usually had a dissertation proposal approved. Universities often call this status doctoral candidacy, and the student is a PhD candidate.

What the stage involves

The ABD phase is mostly independent research and writing. Students conduct their studies, collect and analyze data or archival materials, and write the dissertation chapters under the guidance of a supervisor and committee. They may also teach, work as research assistants, present at conferences and apply for jobs or postdoctoral positions.

Why it is hard

The structure that coursework provides disappears. Progress depends on self-direction, and many students struggle with isolation, motivation, funding limits, changes in research direction or complications in data collection. Completion rates and times vary by field, and some students leave at this stage.

Strategies to finish

  • Set a schedule with milestones and regular deadlines.
  • Meet with your supervisor regularly, and communicate openly.
  • Write consistently, even in small amounts.
  • Join or form a writing group for accountability.
  • Use institutional support, such as writing centers, workshops and counseling.
  • Check deadlines, since programs have time limits for candidacy.
  • Plan for funding, applying for dissertation fellowships and completion grants.
  • Start job applications early, but avoid letting them derail the dissertation.

Using the term

On a resume or in an application, ABD is understood in academia, though it can be misread elsewhere. It is better to write "PhD candidate in History, dissertation expected 2027," which is clearer and more accurate. Do not imply that you hold the doctorate before you have it.

Outside the US

The term is mainly American. In other systems, a doctoral researcher is usually enrolled for the whole period, and the thesis may be written throughout, with an upgrade or confirmation stage after the first year.

After the dissertation

Once the dissertation is submitted and defended, the candidate completes any revisions and graduates. Some programs award a master's, such as an MPhil, at the ABD stage.

Frequently asked questions

Is ABD a degree?

No. It is an informal description of a stage in a doctoral program. Many universities call it doctoral candidacy and may award a master's degree at this point.

How long does the ABD stage last?

Anywhere from one to several years, depending on the field, research design, funding and the support of the supervisor. Many programs set time limits.

Can I list ABD on my resume?

Yes, if it is accurate and clearly explained, such as PhD candidate, dissertation in progress, with the expected date. Do not suggest that you have the doctorate.
