What Is an Articulation Agreement?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

An articulation agreement is a formal agreement between two or more colleges or universities that spells out how courses and credits completed at one institution will be accepted at another. It is most often used between community colleges and four-year universities, to make transfer smoother and help students avoid losing credits.

How they work

The agreement lists courses at the sending college and the equivalent courses at the receiving one, or states that a completed program such as an associate degree satisfies a block of requirements. Some agreements are course-to-course. Others are program-to-program, guaranteeing that a student who completes the specified courses with the required grades will enter the university with junior standing, or with general education requirements met.

Many states have statewide articulation systems with common course numbering or transfer pathways for popular majors, and some universities have guaranteed admission agreements that ensure acceptance for students who meet GPA and course criteria.

Why they matter

Without an agreement, each university decides individually which credits to accept, and students sometimes find that courses count only as electives or not at all. Following a documented pathway protects your time and money, and it helps you choose the courses that fit your intended major.

How to use one

  • Decide your target college and major early.
  • Find the agreement on the transfer pages, and print or save it.
  • Meet with advisors at both colleges.
  • Take the listed courses and meet GPA and grade requirements.
  • Keep records, including syllabi, in case of disputes.
  • Check the date, since agreements are revised and can expire.

Limits

Agreements may not cover every major or course, and some depend on grades or program changes. Admission to competitive majors may still require an application. Read the fine print.

Frequently asked questions

Does an articulation agreement guarantee admission?

Sometimes. Some agreements guarantee admission if you meet GPA and course requirements, and others only guarantee that credits will be accepted. Read the details.

Where do I find articulation agreements?

On the transfer pages of the colleges involved, or in a state transfer database. Your advisor or transfer center can also help.

What if my courses are not covered by the agreement?

The receiving college evaluates them individually, and they may count as electives or not transfer. Ask for a written evaluation before you enroll.
