What Is a Blue Book Exam?
A blue book exam is a written exam in which students answer essay questions by hand in a small booklet with blue covers and blank lined pages. The name comes from the traditional blue booklets sold in US campus bookstores. The term remains common in history, literature, political science and other humanities and social science courses, even though booklets are sometimes other colors.
How it works
You arrive at the exam with a blank booklet, a pen and nothing else unless allowed. The instructor distributes the questions, which are usually broad essay prompts requiring argument and evidence. You write your name and course details on the cover and answer in the booklet, then hand it in at the end.
Some instructors give the questions in advance, such as a list of possible prompts, so that you can prepare outlines. Others provide choice among several questions.
What to bring
- A blue book, bought in advance.
- Two reliable pens, usually blue or black.
- Your student ID, if required.
- A watch, if clocks are not visible and watches are allowed.
- Nothing else unless the instructor says so.
Writing a strong answer
- Read the question carefully, and underline instructions such as compare, evaluate or explain.
- Plan for a few minutes. Jot a quick outline in the margin or the back of the booklet.
- Start with a clear thesis that answers the question.
- Support it with evidence, such as examples, dates, readings and concepts from the course.
- Organize with short paragraphs and clear topic sentences.
- Watch the time, and budget it per question.
- Leave a few minutes to proofread and fix errors.
Handwriting and legibility
If your handwriting is hard to read, write slowly, leave space, skip lines if the booklet permits, and use a pen that does not smudge. Graders cannot reward what they cannot read. Students with documented needs can arrange typed exams or extra time through disability services.
Practice
Write practice essays by hand under timed conditions, since writing speed and stamina improve with training. Review model answers and feedback.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy a blue book?
Usually yes. Bookstores sell them cheaply, and instructors may provide them. Check the instructions, and buy one in advance in case the bookstore runs out.
Do I have to write in pen?
Often blue or black ink is required or preferred for legibility. Some instructors allow pencil. Follow the instructions.
How do I manage time in a blue book exam?
Spend a few minutes outlining each answer, divide time by points, leave a few minutes to review and write legibly. A clear answer beats a long one that runs out of time.
