What Is an eVisa (Formerly the BRP)?
An eVisa is a digital record of a person's immigration status held online by UK immigration authorities. It is replacing the physical biometric residence permit, or BRP, a plastic card that international students and other migrants used to prove their right to study, work and rent in the UK. The change is part of a move to a digital immigration system, and details and dates have been updated over time, so check the latest official guidance.
How the old system worked
Students on a UK Student visa collected a BRP shortly after arrival. The card showed identity details, photograph, visa type, conditions and expiry date. Universities checked it for registration, and employers and landlords used it for right-to-work and right-to-rent checks.
How an eVisa works
You hold your status in an online account with UK Visas and Immigration. Instead of showing a card, you log in and generate a share code, which you give to a university, employer or landlord. They use the code to view the relevant details online for a limited time. You can also check your own status, conditions and expiry date in your account.
What students should do
- Create or sign in to your account when asked, using your passport or other identity documents.
- Keep your details up to date, including passport, email and phone number.
- Learn how to generate a share code, for registration and work checks.
- Keep your passport valid, and tell the authorities when you renew it.
- Check the instructions from your university, which will explain how to complete enrollment checks.
- Be careful of scams. Only use official government websites and never share your account details.
Travel and issues
When traveling, carriers and border officials may ask for evidence of your status. Follow current official guidance on what to carry. If your details are wrong or your account will not load, contact the official helpline and your university's international student advice team.
Why it matters
Your eVisa shows your permission to study and any work conditions. Misunderstanding conditions, such as hours of permitted work, can affect your status.
