What Is a Registration Hold?
A registration hold is a restriction placed on your student account by a college office that prevents you from doing certain things, most often registering for classes. Holds may also block access to transcripts, diplomas or other services. They exist to make sure that obligations such as payments or paperwork are completed.
Common causes
- Unpaid balances with the bursar, including tuition, housing or fines.
- Missing immunization or health records.
- Library fines or unreturned materials.
- Overdue loan paperwork, such as entrance counseling or a promissory note.
- Academic issues, such as probation or an advising requirement before registration.
- Missing documents, such as transcripts, test scores or proof of residency.
- Parking or conduct violations.
- Failure to complete mandatory training or surveys.
What a hold may block
Depending on the type, a hold can stop you from registering, adding or dropping classes, viewing grades, requesting transcripts, receiving a diploma or accessing housing. Some are "soft" holds that merely require an advising meeting.
How to find and clear a hold
- Look in your student portal, usually under holds or to-do items, which show the office and the action required.
- Contact the office that placed it, by email or in person.
- Complete the requirement, such as paying a bill, submitting a form or meeting an advisor.
- Confirm removal, and check that you can register.
- Keep proof, such as receipts or confirmation emails.
Act early. Registration windows can close quickly, and popular courses fill up.
Avoiding holds
- Check your account at the start of each term and before registration.
- Pay or arrange a payment plan before deadlines.
- Return library books.
- Submit required forms on time.
- Respond to emails from administrative offices.
If you think a hold is wrong
Contact the office with evidence, such as a receipt. If you cannot resolve it, ask the registrar or the dean of students for help.

How do I remove a hold?
Contact the office that placed it, such as the bursar, library, health services or advising, and complete what they require. The hold is removed once the issue is resolved.
