What Is a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

A CAS, or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, is an electronic reference that a UK university or other licensed sponsor issues to an international student who has accepted an offer and meets the conditions. It is a key part of the application for a UK Student visa. The CAS is not a visa itself, and it is not a guarantee that the visa will be granted.

What it contains

The CAS includes a unique reference number and details of the sponsoring institution, the student and the course. These typically include your name, date of birth, nationality and passport details, course title, level and dates, tuition fees due and paid, and other information used by immigration authorities. The university generates it through the sponsor system, and you receive the number and a statement.

How you get one

  1. Accept your offer and meet any academic conditions.
  2. Meet other requirements, such as an English language test, a deposit and, where required, an interview or credibility check.
  3. Provide documents to the university, including your passport, qualifications and, where relevant, financial evidence.
  4. Receive the CAS from the university's admissions or international office.
  5. Apply for your Student visa online, using the CAS number, within the time limit stated.

Requirements and processes change often, so read the official government guidance and your university's instructions.

Checking and using it

Read all the details carefully and check them against your passport. Mistakes can cause problems with your visa. The CAS can be used for a limited time, and you may need to apply within a set number of months of receiving it. If your plans change, tell the university, since CAS numbers may be withdrawn or reissued.

Common issues

  • Delays while the university checks documents or you pay a deposit.
  • Incorrect details on the CAS.
  • Missing financial or English requirements.
  • Applying too early or late relative to course start dates.

Frequently asked questions

When do I receive my CAS?

After you accept an unconditional offer, meet any conditions and the university confirms you are eligible, which may include a deposit and financial and English requirements. Timing varies.

Is a CAS the same as a visa?

No. It is a document, or reference number, that you need to apply for the visa. The visa itself is issued by the UK government.

What should I check on my CAS?

Your name, date of birth, passport number, course details, dates, fees paid and the sponsor. If anything is wrong, ask the university to correct it before you apply.
