What Is a Chancellor?
A chancellor is a senior leader of a university, but the meaning of the title depends heavily on the country and the institution. In some places the chancellor is the chief executive, and in others the post is largely ceremonial.
In the United States
Many US universities and systems use "chancellor" for their chief executive. For example, some state systems have a chancellor who oversees the system and presidents who lead individual campuses, and other universities have a chancellor as the head of a campus reporting to a system president. Elsewhere "president" is the usual title. The role includes setting strategy, managing the budget, fundraising, representing the university and working with trustees or regents.
In the United Kingdom and Commonwealth
The chancellor is usually a ceremonial head, often a distinguished public figure, who presides over graduation ceremonies and represents the university but does not run it. The vice-chancellor is the chief executive and academic officer responsible for the daily management of the institution. Pro-vice-chancellors assist in particular areas. In Canada, Australia, India and several other countries, similar structures apply, with chancellors as ceremonial heads and vice-chancellors or presidents as executives.
In Germany and parts of Europe
"Kanzler" in some German universities is the chief administrative officer, in charge of finance and administration, working with the president or rector, who leads academically. Other European universities use rector for the head.
Why the difference matters
If you read that the "chancellor" announced a policy or signed your degree, the meaning depends on where you are. In the US, the chancellor may be the person who decides, while in the UK the chancellor is more likely to appear at ceremonies, with the vice-chancellor making decisions.
What students encounter
You will most likely see the chancellor at convocations and graduations or through public statements, and student leaders may meet them. For day-to-day issues, deal with departments, advisors and the registrar.
