What Is Convocation?
Convocation is a formal ceremony or assembly of a university community. The word comes from Latin for calling together. Its meaning varies by country, so it is worth checking what a particular college intends.
Graduation convocation
In Canada, India, Pakistan and some other countries, convocation is the main graduation ceremony at which degrees are conferred. Students in academic dress file in with faculty, hear speeches, are presented to the chancellor or president and receive degrees, usually in groups by faculty or school. Many Canadian universities hold spring convocations in May or June and fall ceremonies in autumn or winter.
In the UK, similar ceremonies are called graduation, and in the US, commencement.
Opening convocation
In the United States, convocation more often means a ceremony at the start of the academic year that welcomes new students, introduces the institution's traditions and values and addresses the community. It may include a keynote speaker, a procession of faculty, performances and sometimes a signing of an honor code or a symbolic walk through a gate or archway.
Some colleges hold a closing or honors convocation at the end of the year to recognize academic achievements and awards.
Other uses
Convocation can also refer to an assembly of a religious or academic body, or to a university's governing assembly of graduates, such as the Convocation of the University of Oxford or in several Indian universities, which has a formal governance role.
What to expect
Dress codes vary. Graduation requires academic regalia, and opening convocations may ask for business or formal clothing. Plan for long ceremonies with seating and speeches, and check for guest ticket limits and accessibility arrangements.
Why it matters
Ceremonies mark transitions and build community. They offer a chance to celebrate, meet staff and classmates and be recognized, though degrees do not depend on attending.
