What Is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

A designated learning institution, or DLI, is a school in Canada that has been approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. International students who need a study permit must be accepted by a DLI. Each DLI has a unique number, and the school's status is recorded on the official list kept by the federal immigration authorities.

What DLI status means

DLIs are recognized as meeting certain standards and responsibilities, such as reporting on international student enrollment and compliance. DLIs include universities, colleges, polytechnics, some private career colleges and some secondary schools. Not all schools in Canada are DLIs, and some are approved only for specific programs or for students under a certain age.

Why it matters to you

Your study permit application requires a letter of acceptance from a DLI, which shows the DLI number. If your school is not designated, your application can be refused. In addition, some benefits depend on the school and program, such as eligibility for a post-graduation work permit, which has depended on the kind of institution and program. Rules change, so check the current regulations.

How to check

  1. Find the official DLI list on the Canadian government's immigration website.
  2. Search for the school and campus, since different campuses may have different numbers.
  3. Confirm the program is eligible if you plan to work in Canada after graduating.
  4. Ask the school's international office if you are unsure.
  5. Be cautious with unfamiliar private colleges, and read reviews and official guidance.

Warning signs

  • A school that is not on the list.
  • Agents who promise guaranteed visas or jobs.
  • Programs that seem to be only a route to work.
  • Requests for large payments before admission.

Responsibilities of students

Once in Canada, you must remain enrolled and make progress, and follow the conditions on your study permit, including limits on working hours. Changing school may require notifying immigration authorities.
