What Is a Fresher?
A fresher is a student in their first year at a university, mostly in the United Kingdom, Ireland and some other Commonwealth countries. The word is the rough equivalent of the American "freshman" and is often used informally as in "I am a fresher at Leeds."
Freshers' week
New students are welcomed with freshers' week, which in practice may last up to two weeks. It combines practical and social events:
- Registration and enrollment, collecting your student card and setting up accounts.
- Orientation sessions about your department, library, support services and timetable.
- Societies and clubs fairs, where you can sign up for sports, interest groups and cultural societies.
- Social events, from quizzes and film nights to club nights.
- Welcome talks from the students' union and student support services.
Some universities hold "welcome week" as a more inclusive name, and programs for international students often run before or alongside it.
Making the most of it
- Go to the practical sessions, because they explain key systems and deadlines.
- Try a few societies, and see which ones suit you.
- Meet people in your accommodation and course.
- Look after yourself, with regular meals, sleep and moderate drinking if you drink.
- Find the support services early, including wellbeing, disability and international advisers.
Tips for those who find it hard
Freshers' events can feel overwhelming. You are not alone if you feel homesick or find big social events uncomfortable. Look for low-key activities, talk to your personal tutor or the wellbeing service and give yourself time. Friends often form gradually through course work and societies.

Frequently asked questions
What is freshers' week?
The first week or two of the academic year, with welcome events, society fairs, social nights, registration and orientation. The program differs by university.
Is a fresher the same as a freshman?
Roughly. Both mean a first-year undergraduate, but fresher is the UK and Irish term and freshman is the US one.
Do I have to go to freshers' events?
No. Many events are optional, and some students prefer quieter options. Many universities also provide alcohol-free and low-key activities.
