What Is a Matriculation Exam?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

A matriculation exam is a national or regional examination taken at the end of secondary education that certifies that a student has completed school and may qualify for university entry. The term, used in many countries, comes from matriculation, the process of formally entering a university.

Examples around the world

  • South Africa: students take the National Senior Certificate exams at the end of grade 12, often called Matric. Results determine eligibility for bachelor's, diploma or higher certificate study, with university-specific requirements.
  • Finland: the Matriculation Examination, or ylioppilastutkinto, is taken at the end of upper secondary school, and results are used in higher education admissions.
  • Israel: the Bagrut exams qualify students for higher education.
  • Hong Kong and Singapore: the HKDSE and A Level or other pre-university exams serve similar roles. Some regions historically used the term for pre-university programs.
  • India and Pakistan: terms like matriculation can refer to the class 10 board exam, a secondary school certificate.
  • Other countries: the French baccalauréat, the German Abitur and the Italian maturità are comparable school-leaving exams.

How they work

Students take written, and sometimes oral or practical, exams in several subjects. Results are reported by grade or points and are published by examination boards. Universities set entry requirements in terms of the results, such as a minimum total, specific subjects or a certain level in mathematics.

Applying abroad

International universities usually have guides that explain how your national qualification compares with their own entry requirements. They may ask for official transcripts, translations and a credential evaluation. Some require additional tests such as English proficiency exams.

Planning

Check which subjects and grades are needed for your intended course, and plan your exam choices accordingly. If you are applying abroad, look up equivalence statements early and ask admissions offices if something is unclear.

Same word, different meaning

Matriculation also describes the formal enrollment of a student in a university. See our entry on matriculation.
