What Is OUAC?

GlossaryUpdated October 27, 20262 min read

OUAC stands for the Ontario Universities' Application Center. It is a not-for-profit service that processes and manages applications to universities in Ontario, Canada. Instead of sending separate applications to each university, students who apply to Ontario universities usually fill in one online application through OUAC and choose the programs they want.

The main applications

OUAC runs several applications:

  • 101 application: for students who are currently in or have recently finished an Ontario secondary school, applying to Ontario universities.
  • 105 application: for applicants from outside Ontario, such as other provinces or other countries.
  • Teacher education and other specialized applications, for programs such as teacher education and some graduate and professional programs.
  • Ontario Universities' Fair and information services to help students explore options.

Each application is for a particular group of applicants, so check which one applies to you.

How it works

You create an account, enter your personal and education details, and choose universities and programs, up to a set limit with an additional fee for more. Your Ontario secondary school sends grades electronically to universities through OUAC. Some programs require supplementary materials, such as essays, portfolios, auditions or questionnaires, which you submit directly to the university.

Universities make offers in rounds, and you accept an offer through the OUAC system by the deadline. Deadlines are published each year, and the main application deadline is generally in January.

Fees

There is an application fee that covers a set number of choices. Additional choices carry extra charges. Check the OUAC site for current prices.

Tips

  • Check each program's requirements, including prerequisite courses.
  • Meet deadlines, including supplementary material.
  • Keep track of login details and monitor your email and the applicant portal.
  • Plan for aid and scholarships, which may need separate applications.
  • Contact universities if you have questions about requirements.
