How Many Words Is a Page? Pages, Words and Characters Explained
You are given a ten-page paper. Or a 1,500-word essay. Or a limit of 5,000 characters on an application form. They all measure length, but they are not the same measure, and converting between them is less exact than most students expect.
This guide gives you reliable numbers, explains why they change and shows you how to check your own document so you do not have to guess.
The quick answer
For standard academic formatting, which is 12-point Times New Roman, one-inch margins and no extra spacing between paragraphs:
| Spacing | Words per page (approximately) |
|---|---|
| Single-spaced | 500 to 600 |
| 1.5 spaced | 350 to 400 |
| Double-spaced | 250 to 300 |
Use 275 words for a double-spaced page and 550 for a single-spaced page when you need a quick estimate. Headings, block quotes, tables and images reduce the count on any page.
Words to pages: a conversion table
The figures below use double and single spacing with the standard format above. Round up if you are close to a limit.
| Words | Double-spaced pages | Single-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 1 | 0.5 |
| 500 | 2 | 1 |
| 750 | 3 | 1.5 |
| 1,000 | 4 | 2 |
| 1,500 | 5 to 6 | 3 |
| 2,000 | 7 to 8 | 4 |
| 2,500 | 9 to 10 | 5 |
| 3,000 | 11 to 12 | 6 |
| 5,000 | 18 to 20 | 10 |
| 10,000 | 36 to 40 | 20 |
If a number looks higher than you expected, remember that a double-spaced page holds roughly half the text of a single-spaced one. A "10-page paper" is often only about 2,750 words.
Pages to words
To go the other way, multiply:
- Double-spaced: pages × 275
- Single-spaced: pages × 550
So a five-page double-spaced paper is about 1,375 words, and a five-page single-spaced paper is about 2,750.
Why the number changes
Several formatting choices change how many words fit.
- Font. Times New Roman is compact. Arial, Calibri and Georgia take more room, so the same words may fill 10 to 20 percent more of the page.
- Font size. Moving from 11 to 12 point adds noticeable length. Many instructors require 12 point to prevent shrinking text.
- Margins. Wider margins reduce the words per page. One inch is the usual standard.
- Line spacing. Double spacing, 1.5 and exactly 24 points differ slightly.
- Paragraph spacing. A blank line after each paragraph or extra space before headings increases length.
- Headings, lists and tables. They use space without adding many words.
- Images and charts. A single figure can fill half a page.
- Short paragraphs. Many short paragraphs leave white space at line ends.
When an instructor says "five pages," they usually assume standard formatting. Changing the format to reach the limit is risky and some instructors treat it as a breach of the rules.
Characters per word
Some forms and applications set limits in characters, not words. English words average about 4.7 letters. Add a space after each word and a character count including spaces is about 5.7 per word.
| Words | Characters without spaces | Characters with spaces |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 470 | 570 |
| 250 | 1,175 | 1,425 |
| 500 | 2,350 | 2,850 |
| 650 | 3,055 | 3,705 |
| 1,000 | 4,700 | 5,700 |
These are estimates. A text with long technical words runs higher, and a simple text runs lower. A character limit such as 4,000 on a form is about 700 words.
If you apply through systems with a limit, such as the Common App essay with a stated word limit, rely on the counter built into the form rather than your own estimate, since each system counts slightly differently.
How to check your own document
Estimates are fine for planning, but the real count comes from the document itself.
- Word processors. Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Pages show word and character counts. In Word, look at the status bar or use Review and then Word Count. In Google Docs, use Tools and then Word count.
- Select a section. To count the body only, highlight it, excluding the title page, references and appendices, and read the number.
- Check what is included. Word offers a setting for footnotes and text boxes. Decide whether they count under your instructions.
- Use an online counter. Paste text into a counter to confirm. Our word counter shows words, characters and reading time as you type.
- Check pages last. After you finish, apply the required format and see how many pages the document fills.
Does everything count?
Instructions differ, so read the brief. In general:
- Usually excluded: title page, abstract if separate, reference list, appendices, footnotes in some systems.
- Usually included: headings, in-text citations, quotations and the main body.
- Variable: tables, figure captions and footnotes.
If the brief does not say, ask. Many instructors allow a margin of about 10 percent above or below a word limit, but that is not universal, so confirm before relying on it.
When limits disagree
Sometimes an assignment gives both a page count and a word count. Treat the word count as the real limit, and use pages only as a rough guide.
If you get only a page limit and you are far from it, avoid cheap tricks such as larger fonts or wider margins. Better options are to add a section, give an example, analyze a counterargument or use evidence in more depth. Our guide on meeting a word count without padding shows how.
If you are over the limit, cut repeated points, long quotations and background the reader already knows before you touch the formatting.
Speech and presentation length
People also ask how many words fill a spoken slot. Most speakers deliver about 130 to 150 words per minute at a comfortable pace.
| Time | Words (approximately) |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | 130 to 150 |
| 3 minutes | 400 to 450 |
| 5 minutes | 650 to 750 |
| 10 minutes | 1,300 to 1,500 |
| 20 minutes | 2,600 to 3,000 |
For slides, a common guide is to plan one to two minutes per slide. A ten-minute talk therefore uses about 5 to 10 slides, with very few words on each.
Reading time
Adults read about 200 to 250 words per minute on screen. A 1,500-word article takes about six to seven minutes. If you are writing for a reader, such as a blog post or a report summary, this helps you set a length.
Practical tips
- Write to the word limit first, then format and check pages.
- Keep a spare ten percent so edits do not push you over.
- Save the formatting settings required by the course as a template.
- Do not count the reference list unless the instructions say so.
- Recount after each major edit, not only at the end.
Special cases
- Block quotes. Long quotations are often indented and single-spaced, so they use less room than their word count suggests.
- Footnotes. Footnotes sit at the bottom of the page in a smaller font, so a heavily footnoted page may hold more or fewer total words.
- Bullet lists. Lists leave white space and reduce words per page.
- Non-English text. Languages with longer words, such as German, fill pages faster than English for the same number of words. Languages with short words may fit more words per page.
- Code or math. Equations and code blocks take much more room than their word count.
- Handwritten work. A handwritten page holds far fewer words, often about 150 to 200 on lined paper, depending on handwriting size.
A quick way to estimate before you write
If you need to plan the length of a paper, divide the page limit into sections. For a ten-page double-spaced paper, which is around 2,750 words, you might plan an introduction of one page, three body sections of two to three pages each and a conclusion of one page. Seeing the plan in words keeps you from running out of material or space halfway through.
The bottom line
A page is not a fixed number of words, but 275 words for a double-spaced page and 550 for a single-spaced page are a good working guide. Use them to plan, check your real count in your document, follow the rule you are given, and keep the quality of the writing ahead of the arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
How many words are on a double-spaced page?
About 250 to 300 words with 12-point Times New Roman and one-inch margins. A page of single-spaced text holds roughly 500 to 600 words.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About two to four pages, depending on spacing and font. Double-spaced it is usually about 3 to 4 pages, and single-spaced it is about 2.
How many characters are in a word?
On average English words are about 4.7 letters long, so a count with spaces is about 5.7 characters per word. The exact number depends on the text.
Does the reference list count toward the page limit?
Usually not, and neither do title pages or appendices, but rules differ. Check your assignment brief or ask your instructor.
What if my instructor gives pages and the checker shows words?
Format the document as instructed, such as 12-point, double spaced, then count pages. If a word limit is given instead, follow the word limit and ignore the page count.
